Chapter Ten

The large dining room on the third floor was half full, when I grabbed a tray and loaded it up with a cheeseburger, fries, and an iced tea. I moved over to the table Lisa was sitting at, as usual the council wasn’t down there yet, but Ceara’s day guard was off her shift.

Besides Lisa, who smiled at me warmly as I sat down, there were a few others at the table.

Tammy and Matt, who as far as I could tell were always together, mostly because I’d never seen them apart. Tammy was a kind and sunny person, but not in an annoyingly perky way. She was a golden blonde haired and blue-eyed bombshell that was as attractive as she was taken, with Matt of course. She was also already dressed for the club, wearing a tied on the side pulse shirt to make it cling more to her curves, and short black skirt. She was the bartender at pulse for weeknights. Matt was one of the coven’s enforcers, with light blond hair, and light blue eyes, and he worked as a bouncer at pulse so it worked for them. They both nodded to me.

Eustice and Daniel were there as well, but the other usual suspects were absent. Eustice was the manager of the coven’s drinking establishments, the two clubs, a sports bar, and a billiard hall. Daniel was an accountant in the offices on the second floor.

Lisa said brightly, “Congratulations.”

I was confused at what she meant, for about half a second, then grinned when I realized my engagement to Katy had been bound to come up last night.

“Thanks.”

Eustice shook his head mock sadly, “Poor naïve man.”

I snickered, and tammy elbowed him hard. It was also a good lead in for my question about my current living situation.

“I was actually wondering if I could rent the condo for six months. It seems silly to find a new place when in half a year I’d just have to sell it.”

Everyone at the table looked at Daniel, so I did too.

Daniel said, “Allies don’t pay.”

I nodded in agreement, then argued, “For short-term accommodations and help, which I appreciate, but moving in for six months is different, isn’t it? It’d be less helping me out than me becoming a long-term pest, I mean guest.”

Ice snickered, “Got it right the first time.”

Lisa smirked, “Better company than most. We missed you last night.”

If I didn’t know better, I’d say Lisa’s casual and warm flirty statement was showing interest, but she was just that friendly with everyone. Sometimes I felt like she’d learned the true secret of life. I knew she wanted a vampire partner to spend her life with, but she was joyfully content in herself until he showed up. That hadn’t always been the case I knew.

Daniel shrugged, “I’ll ask about it, but don’t be surprised if they just blow it off. Having a powerful ally live in the building is to our benefit too.”

Eustice nodded, “In all seriousness, what he said. I get it though, no one wants to feel like a leech.
